The Gassals 2017
It is a prevalent custom in societies where the main religion is Islam, that the body of the deceased should be washed, cleansed, receive ablution, be bathed with nice scents, and get draped with clean white cloth before burial. This process would have previously been performed by family members and religious workers before our societies became industrialized. A body would often wait in the house of the bereaved family, but in modern cities the body now lays in wait at a morgue, and the washing service is done by professional workers who are assigned by the municipality.
Because a family no longer handles the body of the deceased themselves, the bond between the living and the dead has broken in some ways. Now it is the job of the municipality workers to take over that bond and it becomes interesting in a new way. For we are living like we will never die, and merely watch over those dealing with the dead. Witnessing the people who never forget their mortality is a good opportunity to think about our own.
Gassallar 2017
Toplumumuzda yaygın olan İslam inancına göre, ölmüş olan kişinin bedeni defin işlemlerinden önce yıkanır, temizlenir, dini kurallara göre abdest aldırılır, güzel kokularla süslenir ve beyaz, temiz kefen bezleri ile kefenlenir. Bu işlemler, sanayi toplumuna geçişimiz öncesinde genellikle aile fertleri ve yaşanan yerde bulunan din görevlileri tarafından yapılmaktaydı. Cenazeler definden önce evde bekletilirdi, ancak günümüzde şehirlere kaymış olan yaşam alanlarında cenazeler morglarda beklemekte, yıkama işlemleri belediyelerin görevlendirdikleri profesyonel kişiler tarafından yapılmaktadır.
Ölü bedenle kurduğumuz organik bağın kopmuş olması, bu işi yapan kişilerin işlerini ve işleriyle olan ilişkilerini bizim için ilginç kılmaktadır. Hiç ölmeyecekmiş gibi yaşayan bizler için, hep ölü bedenle çalışan insanların ölümle kurdukları ilişki içerisinde günlük hayatlarını gözlemlemek, kendisinin ölümlülüğünü hiç unutmayan bu insanların hayatlarına tanık olmak, kendi hayatlarımız üzerine düşünebilmek için iyi bir fırsattır.
